Kefalonia Island

written by kettermichelle

Welcome to my favorite place on earth. Compared to last year, this time the experience was quite different. We packed our backpacks which included a water bottle, a blanket, some tuna fish and a piece of bread. We bought ferry tickets from Patra to Sami, Kefalonia (round trip costs about 34€/person) and hit the road by foot. We didn’t have a lot of money with us and all we knew is that we have one destination we need to get to- Myrtos beach. We basically hitch hiked 2 days in a row and met amazing people that helped us. Something I’ve learned from last years trip is that being spontaneous and not worrying too much is the best thing you can actually do.

So we arrived to Sami, ate some 2.5€ gyros and started to hitch hike. We made it to Myrtos beach (about 12km from the harbour city Sami)  with 2 different cars. As I probably mentioned in my earlier post, it’s totally safe to hitch hike in Greece. I’m not sure if I would do it alone tho. But super safe with friends. The other car that picked us up was a brand new big ass Mercedes Benz mini bus and the driver was a 19 year old local who was kind enough to help us to get to Myrtos. He was super funny because he wasn’t that good at speaking english haha.. we still make fun about him because he said ”look” after his every sentence in a really funny accent. He also offered to take us to a big big party on the other side of the island that was supposed to happen the next night but we skipped that party because we had company joining us in Kefalonia the next day. No regrets tho, because something wonderful happened the next day….

Arriving to Myrtos beach, this was the view waiting for us

Aaahhh. I couldn’t believe I was back at my happy place where I left my heart a year ago. Turquoise blue sea, the most incredible waves I’ve ever seen and beautiful rocks at the beach. We had already earlier made the decision to sleep at the beach on the sand. Little did we know that it will be freezing cold at night.. we pretty much didn’t sleep at all because it was so cold. I had about 50 mosquito bites in the morning. I’m not even kidding! It was horrible haha.. but, we stayed positive and made jokes about that night. When the sun came up, the warmth felt like heaven. So we had about 4 hour long nap at the beach in the morning because we were just frustrated from the night..

We packed our bags and continued our journey back to Sami and guess what.. ofcourse a big black mini bus picks us up once again hahah. Might sound creepy but the people were really friendly. We met up with our friends Alexandros and Nicolas from last years trip to Lefkada island. The boys told us that they know a great beach in Kefalonia called Antisamos, where we could sleep on the next night. So, we continued with our hitch hiking and surprise surprise… once again a small van stopped to pick us up on our way to Antisamos beach. It turned out that the guy that picked us up was a worker from the Antisamos beach club. Thanks to that, we actually managed to get ourselves a huuuuge upgrade from sleeping on the sand to sleeping on those beautiful princess-vibes cozy looking beach beds with white curtains. We almost cried of happiness that day..

We stayed up pretty late just talking about life, catching up and enjoying the moment. Funny how the power of the universe can lead you to the exact place that you need to be. By the end of this trip I felt another level of gratitude inside me.

The next morning we got up at 6am and hit the ferry back to Patras in the morning because my plane left back to Helsinki the day after that.
